A bus fell into a ravine on Sunday in Brazil’s Alagoas state, killing 17 people. The crash occurred on a remote mountain road, leaving authorities struggling to recover bodies and help the injured.
Police worked to identify the victims and remove bodies from the wreckage. The bus fell over 20 meters (65 feet) into a steep ravine, according to the Alagoas state government. Several people sustained injuries, but the exact number remains unknown.
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva expressed his condolences on X. He promised government support to assist local authorities in helping victims and their families.
Governor Paulo Dantas declared three days of mourning. On X, he described the incident as a “tragedy” and extended sympathies to those affected.
The bus was carrying around 40 passengers when the driver reportedly lost control due to a mechanical failure. The vehicle veered off the mountain road near União dos Palmares and crashed in a hard-to-reach area.
The crash happened in the Serra da Barriga mountain range, an area tied to Brazil’s history. This region was once home to Quilombo dos Palmares, a 17th-century settlement founded by escaped slaves. The site represents resistance against colonial oppression.
November is Brazil’s “Black Awareness” month, with a public holiday on November 20 honoring Zumbi, the leader of Quilombo dos Palmares. The tragedy adds to the sadness of this time of remembrance.
Racial equality minister Anielle Franco expressed her sorrow on X. She wrote, “This tragedy saddens us even more deeply during this month of Black Awareness.”
Rescue teams continue their efforts as the nation mourns this heartbreaking loss.
