After the Indian National Lok Dal fielded Abhay Chautala, the ruling BJP fielded its contestant Govind Kanda who recently joined the party and is the brother of legislator Gopal Kanda. Following this, the Congress, the main opposition party in the state has fielded Pawan Beniwal from the seat.
In view of the present situation, the experts are mulling why BJP decided to field a person in the election who is a newcomer in the party. Prior to this INLD had fielded the party stalwart and general secretary Abhay Singh Chautala to contest the election who was elected legislator from the seat and resigned supporting farmers sitting on agitation against three contentious agriculture laws. He is believed to be the strongest claimant in this battle. So in wake of this, the BJP is leaving no stone unturned to survive the seat and it is evident as most of the senior leaders and party stalwarts marked their presence during the filing of nomination of the party candidate. The BJP President OP Dhankhar, Cabinet Ministers including Ranjeet Singh and Sandeep Singh, Sunita Duggal MP from Sirsa, and the former party president Subhash Brala were present there with Govind Kanda, and this indicates a lot in itself.
The Congress, main opposition party in the state, also has declared its contestant for the by-election— Pawan Beniwal. The party is mulling on all possible aspects as the election is going to be the litmus test. Prior to this, everyone was eyeing on the moves of the Congress and the party decided the name of the candidate at last. Congress continues to witness widened rift among its senior leaders, particularly between the state president Kumari Seleja and Bhupender Singh Hooda who also holds the portfolio of the leader of the opposition in the assembly. Further, it cannot be denied that most of the party legislators are supporting Hooda continuously and the ongoing tussle is most likely to affect the by-poll if the situation remains unchanged.
Thus, in the wake of the ongoing political scenario, it is evident that people are going to witness a multi-cornered battle among all factions including the BJP-JJP, Congress and the INLD. Although, the result of the bypoll will not have much affect politically as the BJP-JJP led government owns full majority. Even then, losing or winning an election matters a lot for all parties, as it has to have a meaning and indication about the mood of the people and voters towards the government and the opposition.
