US President Donald Trump officially ended the extended Secret Service protection granted to former Vice President Kamala Harris on Friday, 29 August, which was authorized under President Biden. The decision will come into effect from September 1, 2025, ahead of Harris’s planned nationwide book tour promoting her memoir, 107 Days, hence stripping away assigned agents and surveillance coverage of her residence.
The term refers to the security services that are assigned to high-profile individuals by the US Secret Service, an agency that functions under the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
Kamala Harris’s secret service protection Revoked
Legally, former Vice President Harris qualified for six months of post-office secret service protection. Before his term ended, President Biden issued an executive order and extended this coverage for an additional year before leaving office.

Kamala Harris vs. Donald Trump
Kamala Harris, running as a Democratic candidate, experienced a substantial electoral defeat to Republican candidate Donald Trump in the 2024 general election held on November 5, 2024.
Official Memo Orders Discontinued Harris security
Through an official memorandum, Donald Trump terminated Harris’s previously extended security service and said, “You are hereby authorized to discontinue any security-related procedures previously authorized by Executive Memorandum, beyond those required by law, for the following individual, effective September 1, 2025: Former Vice President Kamala D. Harris.”
The decision comes only weeks ahead of Kamala Harris’s nationwide book tour promoting 107 Days, her memoir on the 2024 campaign.
Trump survived two assassination attempts during his campaign last year, showing the high-security risk for presidents and ex-candidates.

No More Agents with Kamala Harris
As a result of the revocation, Harris will no longer have the two secret agents assigned to her, nor the surveillance of her Los Angeles residence, nor the resources used to identify and prevent maximum potential threats.
Comparable private security could cost millions of dollars every year, showing how expensive it is to protect important people.
Since taking office in January, President Trump has systematically reduced Secret Service coverage for multiple prominent figures, including Hunter and Ashley Biden and Dr. Anthony Fauci, former director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, showing a larger change in how federal security is assigned.
Why Trump cancels Kamala Harris’s Secret Service protection
The Trump memo did not affect the legally mandated six months of protection; he only ended the extra year that Biden had added, a decision well within the rights of the sitting president.
