Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, who is contesting the New York City mayoral election as an Independent candidate, has firmly rejected U.S. President Donald Trump’s endorsement, making it clear that he does not want or accept Trump’s support. Cuomo is running against Democrat Zohran Mamdani and Republican Curtis Sliwa in one of the most closely watched political battles in the U.S.

During a campaign stop in Washington Heights, Cuomo clarified his position after Trump publicly backed him over Mamdani. Dismissing the endorsement, Cuomo said, “He didn’t say that. He didn’t say that. He did not say that.” He further added, “He called me a bad Democrat. First of all, I happen to be a good Democrat and a proud Democrat, and I’m going to stay a proud Democrat.”

Earlier, Cuomo had stated that he would not accept any endorsement from Trump, distancing himself from the former President’s controversial political rhetoric.

Trump’s Endorsement Sparks Political Buzz

Just a day before the NYC mayoral election, Donald Trump endorsed Andrew Cuomo while criticizing Zohran Mamdani. On Truth Social, Trump told New Yorkers that they “really have no choice” but to vote for Cuomo, warning them not to back Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa, as it would indirectly help Mamdani, whom he labeled a “communist.”

Trump further claimed he might cut federal funding to New York if Mamdani wins, writing, “If Communist Candidate Zohran Mamdani wins the Election for Mayor of New York City, it is highly unlikely that I will be contributing Federal Funds, other than the very minimum as required.”

He went on to say, “I would much rather see a Democrat, who has had a Record of Success, WIN, than a Communist with no experience and a Record of COMPLETE AND TOTAL FAILURE… Whether you personally like Andrew Cuomo or not, you really have no choice. You must vote for him, and hope he does a fantastic job.”

Zohran Mamdani’s Response

In a quick and witty reaction, Zohran Mamdani shared a post on X featuring an image that read “Trump Endorses Andrew Cuomo,” and commented, “Congratulations, Andrew Cuomo. I know how hard you worked for this.”

NYC Mayoral Election Nears Conclusion

The New York City mayoral elections are set for Tuesday, November 4, with voting open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Early voting, which began on October 25, concluded on Sunday. The race features Independent Andrew Cuomo, Democrat Zohran Kwame Mamdani an Indian-origin leader and Republican Curtis Sliwa. Mamdani has emerged as a front-runner, making the contest one of the most anticipated political showdowns in the U.S. this year.
