Nancy and Rich Kinder among the leading lights in Houston philanthropy have raised the bar in their already extraordinary levels of giving. The couple intends to give 95% of their joint fortune which currently exceeds $10 billion to different causes in the city that inspired their lives. 

The charitable focus of this couple lies further on infrastructure improvements, urban parks, arts and education strengthening. Their other continuing contributions mainly funneled through the Kinder Foundation reflect decades of generosity, having a very significant impact on its community, Houston.

Who is Rich Kinder?

Richard D. Kinder, born in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, in 1944 is a co-founded and executive chairman of Kinder Morgan, one of the largest energy and pipeline companies in North America. He earned a BA and a JD from the University of Missouri and started his energy career with Florida Gas Transmission which then became part of Enron.

After leaving Enron, he started Kinder Morgan with his business partner, William V. Morgan, in 1997. Under him, this one-man company witnessed aggressive growth through acquisitions and is now a premier midstream energy company apart from the business interest, Mr. Kinder has been a member of various boards including the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston and has remained an active figure in public affairs of the city of Houston.

Who is Nancy Kinder?

Nancy Kinder is a native of Louisiana who continues to be the main visionary force behind many of the philanthropic initiatives supported by the Kinder Foundation. She earlier attended the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and has devoted much of her life to improving Houston’s quality of life.

Nancy is president of the Kinder Foundation and managing its key projects such as turning urban green spaces like Discovery Green and Buffalo Bayou Park into more vibrant public landscapes. She sits on various boards such as the Greater Houston Partnership and MD Anderson Cancer Center besides assuring that her philanthropic activities will touch many facets of the community.

Rich and Nancy Kinder’s combined wealth was recently estimated to total about $11.2 billion, making them the richest couple in Houston by 2025. Despite their very considerable wealth, though, the Kinders have asserted that the bulk of it will not remain with them, preferring to commit themselves to donating to charity about 95 percent of their own net worth and devoting funds mainly to causes that improve urban living, strengthen cultural institutions, and provide educational opportunities. Houston Billionaires Reaffirm $10 Billion Pledge

The Kinders renewed their commitment to the cause in their latest statement to ABC13, which included a pledge of $18.5 million for the expansion of Emancipation Park in Houston’s historic Third Ward. The extension project, to be funded by the Kinder Foundation will include new amenities such as an outdoor performance stage and a renovated cultural center.

Such investments add on top of the long list of Kinders investment in making the city better as a whole for the citizenship of Houston. These pledges will contribute to a long and proud history of philanthropy to repurpose needed infrastructure and support underfunded areas of the community.

Decades of Giving through the Kinder Foundation 

The Kinders philanthropy has never been something new; in fact, it is among the patterns defining their living styles for nearly two or more decades. In 1997, in which they got married, they established the Kinder Foundation with the mission of supporting urban development of Houston. Their contributions from the foundation include major projects such as Bayou Greenways 2020 or the Discovery Green which is a downtown park that has become a hallmark of Houston’s revitalized urban space.

As of 2024, the Kinder Foundation has committed over 850 million dollars in grants, focusing on creating vibrant public spaces, improving education and promoting the arts. Their undertaking has transformed Houston and their expectedly long commitment serves as a role model to emulators in philanthropy.
