The United States has openly criticized Brazil’s Supreme Court for placing former President Jair Bolsonaro under house arrest. He is currently facing trial over allegations that he tried to overturn the results of the 2022 presidential election, according to a CNN report.

Why Bolsonaro Is Under House Arrest

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes ordered house arrest for former President Jair Bolsonaro, citing multiple violations of court restrictions. The key violation involved Bolsonaro posting—or allowing others to post—videos on social media where he was seen wearing his ankle monitor. The court had earlier banned him from using public speeches or interviews to influence public opinion, even if those videos appeared on other people’s accounts.

Justice Moraes stated that Bolsonaro’s actions defied this clear order and amounted to an attempt to exploit digital platforms to gain sympathy and stir political unrest. The visible ankle monitor, used as a visual symbol, was seen as part of this strategy.

Under the new restrictions, Bolsonaro must stay confined to his home and is only allowed to meet with his legal team or other individuals specifically approved by the court. He is strictly prohibited from using a mobile phone, either by himself or through someone else, to communicate publicly. The court’s decision aims to prevent any influence over witnesses, ongoing investigations, or public narratives.

The house arrest is part of a broader investigation into Bolsonaro’s alleged involvement in a plot to overturn the 2022 presidential election and prevent President Lula da Silva from taking office.

US Government’s Sharp Reaction

The US State Department’s Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs issued a strong statement on Monday. It accused Justice Moraes of using Brazil’s legal system to “silence opposition and threaten democracy.”

“Putting even more restrictions on Jair Bolsonaro’s ability to defend himself in public is not a public service. Let Bolsonaro speak!” the post said. It further stated, “The United States condemns Moraes’ order imposing house arrest on Bolsonaro and will hold accountable all those aiding and abetting sanctioned conduct.”

Alleged Coup Plot Against Lula

In February, Brazilian prosecutors charged Bolsonaro in connection with a plot to stage a coup and prevent President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva from taking office. The plan reportedly included targeting Lula, his vice president, and a Supreme Court justice for possible assassination. Bolsonaro has denied all allegations.

Trump Backs Bolsonaro, Hits Brazil With Tariffs

Former US President Donald Trump, a long-time Bolsonaro ally, called the trial “politically motivated.” Last week, he followed through on a threat by signing executive orders that imposed a 50% tariff on Brazilian goods—linking the action to Brazil’s ongoing prosecution of Bolsonaro.
