Fighting between Thailand and Cambodia has come to an abrupt halt after both countries agreed to a ceasefire, ending weeks of tension over their long-running border dispute. US President Donald Trump announced the development on Sunday, calling it a diplomatic success and crediting American mediation for the breakthrough.

The ceasefire was signed on Saturday, paving the way for calm along the disputed border areas. Trump’s announcement added global attention to the agreement, with the former president using the moment to underline his role in resolving international conflicts.

Trump Announces Ceasefire on Social Media

Trump shared the news on his Truth Social platform, congratulating the leadership of both countries and declaring that the fighting would stop immediately.

“I am pleased to announce that the breakout fighting between Thailand and Cambodia will stop momentarily, and they will go back to living in PEACE, as per our recently agreed to original Treaty. I want to congratulate both great leaders on their brilliance in coming to this rapid and very fair conclusion,” Trump said.

He described the outcome as decisive and swift, adding that such conflicts should always be resolved without prolonged violence.

‘The US Has Become the REAL United Nations,’ Says Trump

The US President used the ceasefire announcement to repeat his claim that he has helped mediate multiple conflicts in recent months.

“With all of the wars and conflicts I have settled and stopped over the last eleven months, EIGHT, perhaps the United States has become the REAL United Nations, which has been of very little assistance or help in any of them,” Trump said.

His remarks included sharp criticism of the UN, especially in the context of unresolved conflicts such as the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine.

Why Thailand and Cambodia Were Fighting?

Thailand and Cambodia have faced repeated flare-ups over disputed border regions for decades. The latest round of clashes renewed fears of wider instability in Southeast Asia. The ceasefire aims to restore calm while both sides revisit earlier treaty commitments and diplomatic mechanisms.

The agreement comes at a time when regional stability is crucial for trade, tourism, and security cooperation across ASEAN countries.

US Diplomacy in Focus Ahead of Zelensky Meeting

Trump’s comments come just a day before his scheduled meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The two leaders are expected to discuss a proposed 20-point peace formula aimed at ending the war in Ukraine.

By highlighting the Thailand–Cambodia ceasefire, Trump appears to be strengthening his image as a global dealmaker ahead of high-stakes diplomatic talks.

Messaging Power Politics

Beyond the ceasefire itself, Trump’s statement signals a broader shift in how the US wants to project power. By positioning Washington as a faster and more effective mediator than global institutions, Trump is reshaping the narrative around American leadership in global conflict resolution.

Whether this claim holds long-term weight remains to be seen, but the ceasefire has undeniably brought temporary relief to a volatile region.
