During flying back to London from Chequers, a helicopter carrying former President of the United States Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump had to land immediately at an airfield near the route.

The helicopter Marine One encountered what officials termed a minor hydraulic issue. For precautionary measures the pilots diverted to an airfield close by so that they could continue their onward journey using a backup helicopter.

The duration of the flight which was supposed to be 20 minutes was increased to about 40 minutes due to the above incident and thus making it much longer. The White House emphasized that the switch was purely done for safety reasons and both the travelers remained unharmed.

What are Safety Protocols & Public Reaction?

The public and media reaction was prompt, though not overly wild, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said that the crew had acted on what was, by now referred to as “an abundance of caution,” one of those phrases in aviation that signal preventative rather than emergency metropolitan decisions.

“All systems, especially helicopter systems in operations intended for heads of state are fine-tuned to have redundancy mechanisms insured for landing in cases of most non-critical issues,” conceded aviation experts and this is just slightly closer to the risks involved in presidential travel.

Where is Stansted Airport?

Stansted Airport which Trump was to travel to is approximately some 42 miles from Central London towards the direction of Essex. The Stansted is one of the UK’s busiest international airports with handling millions of passengers every year and a major low-cost carrier hub including Ryanair.

Thus, like almost all-important dignitaries and foreign leaders including U.S. presidents, it is an ideal zone in which to find visiting dignitaries because it is located outside the heavily congested airspace around London. It is a spacious site that is easily accessible to all necessary needs including those of security and logistical measures necessary for receiving such high-profile arrivals.

How Marine One Travels to UK?

Marine One does not fly under its own power internationally despite being virtually synonymous with presidential travel. The helicopters VH-3D Sea King or VH-60N White Hawk are disassembled and airlifted abroad via U.S. military cargo aircraft like the C-17 Globemaster III.

When the helicopters reach the host country Marine Corps teams put them together once again and thoroughly check their compliance with operational readiness. This complex procedure involves support crews, spare parts and backup aircraft, all designed to maintain uninterrupted presidential mobility.

What are restrictions of Marine One when airborne?

Marine One helicopters are designed primarily for very short trips. The VH-3D Sea King has an approximate speed of 160 miles per hour with an overall range of around 450 miles. That is far much more than required for regional hops but wholly inadequate for transatlantic travel. This is perhaps one of the major reasons why these aircraft were transported by cargo plane and not flown overseas.
