US President Donald Trump praised Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Army Chief Asim Munir as “great people” and promised to resolve the Pakistan-Afghanistan conflict quickly.

Trump made the remarks on Sunday during the signing of the Thailand-Cambodia peace deal at the ASEAN summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Highlighting Peace Achievements

Referring to the Thai-Cambodia clashes, Trump said his administration has ended eight wars in just eight months. He added, “We’re averaging one a month. There is only one left, although I heard that Pakistan and Afghanistan have started up. But I’ll get that solved very quickly. I know them both. And the Pakistan Field Marshal, and the Prime Minister are great people, and I have no doubt we’re going to get that done quickly.”

Trump said he believes he can settle conflicts effectively: “I do it nicely. I don’t need to do it, I guess. But if I can take time and save millions of lives, that’s really a great thing. I can’t think of anything better to do.” He also highlighted his administration’s unique achievement: “There has never been anything like the eight wars that my administration ended in eight months, and there never will be either.”

Trump on Thailand-Cambodia Peace Deal

Trump said he felt honoured to participate in the Thailand-Cambodia peace agreement. “On behalf of the United States, I’m proud to help settle this conflict and really develop good friendships, including people who work with each team.”

Trump-Sharif Relationship

Earlier this month, Trump recalled Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif’s visit to the US. Sharif praised Trump for stopping the India-Pakistan conflict in May this year, saying:

“He said beautifully that the President (Trump) saved millions of lives.”

India, however, maintained that there was no third-party mediation in reaching the ceasefire after the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack. India launched Operation Sindoor against terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The conflict ended after a four-day ceasefire agreement.

Sharif later called for Trump to be nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize for his “outstanding, extraordinary contributions… to stop the war between India and Pakistan and then achieve a ceasefire along with his very wonderful team.”

Trump responded by calling Sharif’s words “beautiful,” joking: “There wasn’t anything left to say.”

Trump’s Meetings With Pakistani Leaders

Sharif visited the White House for the first time in September during the UN General Assembly. Asim Munir had visited Washington twice this year, including a lunch hosted by Trump at the White House.

Before Sharif’s visit, Trump told reporters:

“In fact, we have a great leader coming, the prime minister of Pakistan coming, and the field marshal of Pakistan. Field Marshal is a very great guy, and so is the Prime Minister. And they are coming, and they may be in this room right now, I don’t know, because we are late, and I said maybe they would like to join. They actually may be somewhere in the beautiful Oval Office.”

Trump’s Role as Global Mediator

Trump’s statements highlight his aspiration to play a global mediator role. From Southeast Asia to South Asia, he positions himself as a leader capable of resolving long-standing conflicts. Experts say this strategy strengthens his image internationally while boosting influence in geopolitically sensitive regions.
