Trump Pushes ‘Peace Agreement’ Over Ceasefire After Putin, Zelensky Talks

Trump says only a peace deal, not a ceasefire, can end the Russia-Ukraine war, as he seeks to place the US at the centre of new global talks.

US President Donald Trump has called for a “Peace Agreement” to end the Russia-Ukraine war, rejecting the idea of a temporary ceasefire. He said ceasefires often collapse, while a permanent deal could end the “horrific” conflict.

His comments followed a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska and a late-night phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders. Trump described the day as “great and very successful,” presenting himself as the leader who could deliver a breakthrough.

US Moves to Central Stage

Trump’s remarks reveal more than a simple preference for peace over a ceasefire. They mark a push to bring Washington back to the centre of negotiations. By speaking to both Moscow and Kyiv, and involving NATO leaders, Trump positioned the US as the indispensable mediator.

He also confirmed that Zelensky would visit Washington on Monday, with a possible trilateral meeting with Putin to follow. This shows Trump’s intent to play broker, shifting the focus of talks from Europe back to American soil.

Trump’s Public Statement

On his Truth Social platform, Trump said leaders agreed that only a direct peace deal could save lives. He wrote, “It was determined by all that the best way to end the horrific war between Russia and Ukraine is to go directly to a Peace Agreement, which would end the war, and not a mere Ceasefire Agreement, which often do not hold up.”

Trump framed the talks as a matter of urgency, saying that millions of lives could be saved if the process moved forward.

Zelensky Confirms Visit

Zelensky also confirmed his US visit in a post on X. He said he welcomed the invitation and expressed readiness for a trilateral meeting with Russia and the US. His remarks suggest that Ukraine is willing to test Trump’s proposal, even as doubts remain about Russia’s long-term intentions.

Alaska Meeting Sets the Tone

The Trump-Putin meeting in Alaska set the stage for these developments. Both leaders said they reached an agreement on “many topics,” but they offered no clear breakthrough.

Yet the symbolism of Putin’s presence in the West for the first time since the war began was striking. For Trump, the meeting was a stage to showcase diplomacy and leadership.

Diplomacy at a Crossroads

Trump’s insistence on a peace deal rather than a ceasefire introduces a new angle to the stalled talks. It also places him in the role of chief negotiator, a position that could redefine US influence in the conflict.

Whether this approach leads to real progress will depend on how far Putin and Zelensky are willing to move. For now, Trump has set the table for a high-stakes week of diplomacy in Washington.
