During a big meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, President Donald Trump said he is planning an executive order to stop mail-in ballots and voting machines in the United States. He made this announcement in front of President Volodymyr Zelensky and seven other European leaders. This plan, targeting the 2026 midterm elections, has caused a lot of concern about whether it follows the Constitution and what it could mean for democracy.

Trump’s Attack on Mail-In Voting

Trump criticized mail-in ballots as corrupt, claiming they undermine democracy. “Mail-in ballots are corrupt mail-in ballots. You can never have a real democracy with mail-in ballots,” he said. He added that the Republican Party will lead efforts to eliminate them. His comments came despite Germany and Britain supporting mail-in voting, showing a stark contrast in democratic norms.

Republicans and Voter Suppression

Experts say Republicans oppose mail-in voting for multiple reasons. First, it increases participation among hourly workers, something the GOP historically seeks to limit. Second, it informs voters, making them less susceptible to misleading TV ads. Third, mail-in ballots expose voter-roll purges, a tactic used to manipulate election outcomes and finally, mail-in voting prevents under-resourced polling places from disproportionately affecting minority communities.

Trump Cites Partisan Motivation

Trump openly admitted that banning mail-in voting would benefit Republicans. “We got to stop mail-in voting, and the Republicans have to lead the charge. The Democrats want it because they have horrible policy,” he said. By ignoring the Constitution, he seeks to centralize election control under the executive branch, violating the principle that states administer elections.

Foreign Influence and Democratic Threat

Reports indicate Trump’s plan followed a private discussion with Putin, who allegedly told him mail-in ballots caused his 2020 loss. Critics argue this is foreign influence on U.S. election law. Trump’s proposal threatens seniors, disabled voters, military personnel, parents, and rural Americans while voting machines are also targeted, risking chaotic hand-counting and election delays.

A Call to Defend Democracy

Legal experts, governors, state legislatures, and attorneys general must challenge any unlawful executive order. Citizens must engage actively to defend the Constitution, and this move is unprecedented and authoritarian, undermining centuries of democratic practice.

Trump’s plan, supported by a compliant Republican Party, could disenfranchise millions. Mail-in voting ensures access, security, and equity and attempts to ban it or voting machines represent a direct assault on democracy.

The future of American democracy depends on staying alert, being brave, and acting quickly while everyone—patriots, progressives, independents, and fair-minded conservatives—needs to come together to stop this power grab.
