US President Donald Trump announced on Monday that he plans to nominate economist EJ Antoni to lead the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).
Antoni is currently the chief economist at the conservative Heritage Foundation and has been a frequent critic of the BLS. If confirmed, he would replace Erika McEntarfer, who was dismissed by Trump on August 1. The president accused McEntarfer of “manipulating” jobs data.
Firing Linked to Weak Jobs Report
McEntarfer’s removal came just hours after the BLS released a report showing weaker-than-expected nonfarm payroll growth for July. The same report also significantly lowered previously reported job gains for June and May.
Trump’s Announcement
In a Truth Social post on Monday evening, Trump wrote, “I am pleased to announce that I am nominating Highly Respected Economist, Dr EJ Antoni, as the next Commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics.”
“Our economy is booming, and EJ will ensure that the numbers released are HONEST and ACCURATE,” he added. “I know EJ Antoni will do an incredible job in this new role. Congratulations EJ!”
Senate Confirmation Needed
Before Antoni can officially take the position, the US Senate must approve his nomination. The BLS operates under the Department of Labor and is responsible for key economic indicators, including employment and inflation statistics.
Links to Project 2025 and Conservative Support
Antoni has been involved with Project 2025, a controversial conservative policy plan aimed at advancing Trump’s second-term goals.
According to The Wall Street Journal, White House officials interviewed Antoni for the role, and former Trump adviser Steve Bannon actively supported his appointment. The report also said Antoni had called for McEntarfer’s removal on Bannon’s podcast after the release of July’s disappointing jobs data.
