Prince William and Kate Middleton is the Prince and Princess of Wales, have started another phase of their lives as they move into Forest Lodge, the historic estate in Windsor. The 43-year-old parents have relocated with their three children Prince George, 12, Princess Charlotte, 10 and Prince Louis, 7, marking a quiet profoundly important shift in the life of the royal family.

According to People, the relocation happened during the children’s school half-term break affording them ample time to get themselves adjusted before getting back into regular life.

Fresh Start for the Wales Family

Compared to their old home, Adelaide Cottage which was only four miles away, Forest Lodge offers the family more space, privacy and stability whereas Adelaide Cottage had only four bedrooms, their new residence boasts eight, making it more accommodating for their growing family.

However, despite the bigger house, the couple has opted to continue without live-in staff. The trusted nanny Maria Turrion Borrallo and housekeepers will stay in cottages on the periphery of the estate. It reflects the couple’s continued desire to afford their children a sense of normalcy as much as possible and balance this with royal responsibilities.

What is the Legacy of Forest Lodge

This Georgian mansion was built in the 1770s and has deep royal connections and the property entered the Crown Estate in 1829, serving as a house for the Deputy Ranger of Windsor Great Park.

For several centuries, it has seen the arrival and departure of royals and their guests. In the 1970s, there was even speculation that Princess Anne and her then husband, Mark Phillips, might be moving there.

Situated within Windsor Great Park, this home grants the family access to enormous green spaces while remaining close to Windsor Castle and other royal estates.

Close to Family, Nature & Healing

The decision to stay in Windsor also keeps the Wales family near Kate’s parents, Carole and Michael Middleton who remain deeply involved in their grandchildren’s lives. William and Kate’s move from Kensington Palace three years ago was largely motivated by a desire for more open space and a calmer environment for their children.

In recent years, the family has faced personal challenges, including the deaths of Queen Elizabeth II in 2022 and health battles for both King Charles and Princess Kate in 2024. Kate’s remission, announced in early 2025, marks a hopeful turning point as they settle into this next phase together.

Privacy, Security & Public Reaction

New safety precautions are in place around the estate to protect the family. Parts of Windsor Great Park including Cranbourne Gate, have become no go areas. A few locals have grumbled about such restrictions to access areas of Windsor but many are sympathetic, realizing that for such a high-profile family, greater privacy is a necessary evil.

To the Prince and Princess of Wales, Forest Lodge will be more than a new home; it’s a sanctuary, a place of recuperation and a symbol of enduring stability in the pressures of public life.
