As Americans head to the polls, several high-stakes local and state elections are drawing national attention. While it’s an off-year with no presidential or congressional contests, critical votes in New York, Virginia, New Jersey and California could influence the political climate ahead of the 2026 midterms. From a fierce mayoral race in New York to a redistricting debate in California, the results may offer early clues about voter sentiment in a deeply divided nation.

New York City Mayoral Race

In New York City, the battle for mayor has emerged as a generational and ideological fight within the Democratic Party. Progressive Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani, age 34, is pitted against veteran Democrat Andrew Cuomo, who was defeated in the primary and then announced his candidacy as an independent. Republican Curtis Sliwa remains in the race, muddying the dynamics.

If elected, Mamdani would become the first Muslim mayor of the city. Mamdani’s platform emphasizes among other economic issues, rent control, food affordability and wages but Cuomo has criticized Mamdani’s experience and record on public safety, tightening the race in the final stretch.

California’s Proposition 50

In California voters are deciding on Proposition 50 is a measure that would open the door to mid-decade congressional redistricting. The initiative, backed by Gov. Gavin Newsom and state Democrats, would seek to counter Republican led redistricting in states such as Texas and Missouri.

Proponents say it’s a needed counterbalance in a political system, while critics are quick to call the move a Democratic power grab. Sixty percent of likely voters polled support the measure, and the partisan divide is partly what is driving this rare middle of the decade vote.

New Jersey Governor’s Race

It’s proving to be an unexpectedly tight governor’s race in New Jersey. Democrat Mikie Sherrill is facing off against Republican Jack Ciattarelli in the contest that might suggest national voter sentiment of both candidates have drawn high-profile support, from Barack Obama for Sherrill to Donald Trump for Ciattarelli. But despite the state’s Democratic lean, Ciattarelli’s emphasis on local issues and Sherrill’s cautious messaging have kept the race competitive.

Virginia’s Historic Governor Election

Regardless of who wins, Virginia will make history. Abigail Spanberger, a Democrat, is running against Winsome Earle-Sears, a Republican, as both seek to become the state’s first female governor. An Earle-Sears victory also would make her the first Black woman ever to be elected to lead any U.S. state. With a combination of urban liberals and rural conservatives, Virginia’s outcome could serve as a political weathervane for the coming national elections.

What is the Trump Factor

Though not on any ballot, Donald Trump’s influence looms over every major race. His endorsements in New Jersey and his criticism of Mamdani in New York show how deeply intertwined his presence remains in U.S. politics. Even California’s Proposition 50 battle reflects the ripple effects of Trump era redistricting efforts. As the votes come in, one question persists how much power does Trump still hold over America’s political direction?
