Indian connections are shining bright in the upcoming US elections, with several Indian-origin and South Asian-American candidates making their mark across the country. From New York to Virginia and New Jersey, these leaders are bringing diverse backgrounds and global perspectives to American politics.

The elections, set for November 4, have sparked global interest due to the strong presence of candidates with roots in India.

Zohran Mamdani: The “Internet’s Mayor” in New York

Zohran Mamdani, the 34-year-old candidate for New York’s mayoral race, has become one of the most talked-about faces in American politics. Son of celebrated Indian filmmaker Mira Nair and Ugandan-Indian scholar Mahmood Mamdani, Zohran is already being hailed by some media outlets as “The Internet’s Mayor.”

Mamdani, known for his social media presence and grassroots activism, has built a reputation for being outspoken on issues like housing, equality, and justice. His Indian and African heritage, combined with his progressive politics, has helped him connect deeply with diverse communities across New York City.

Ghazala Hashmi: Breaking Barriers in Virginia

Another Indian-origin leader making waves is Ghazala Hashmi, the first Muslim and South Asian American to serve in the Virginia Senate. Born in India, Hashmi moved to the US at the age of four with her family. Her father, who completed his PhD in Georgia, inspired her to pursue education and public service.

In 2019, Hashmi created history by defeating a Republican incumbent, giving Democrats the majority in Virginia for the first time in years. She currently serves as the Chair of the Senate Education and Health Committee, focusing on reproductive rights, freedom, and education.

Her rise in American politics has been seen as a reflection of the growing influence of Indian-origin women in leadership roles.

Aftab Pureval: Cincinnati’s Trailblazer with Indian and Tibetan Roots

Aftab Pureval, another name with Indian roots, has also faced his share of challenges in US politics. He has endured racist and ethnocentric attacks due to his diverse background — his father Devinder Singh Pureval has Indian heritage, and his mother is Tibetan Buddhist.

Pureval began his political journey in 2015, running for Hamilton County Clerk of Courts. He has often spoken about his connection to the Tibetan community and the ongoing struggle for freedom in Tibet.

More Indian-Origin Leaders Across the US

The growing Indian presence in American politics doesn’t end there.

Satish Garimella is contesting for mayor in Morrisville, North Carolina, while Dini Ajmani is running for mayor in Hoboken, New Jersey. Former Hoboken mayor Ravi Bhalla is now campaigning for the New Jersey State Assembly.

Local elections in several US states — including New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Washington, Georgia, Florida, and Pennsylvania — are witnessing participation from numerous Indian-American and South Asian candidates.

“Across the country, our communities have the chance to shape the future… and your voice can make the difference between progress and setback,” said a statement by Indian American Impact, a community organisation supporting South Asian candidates.

India’s Growing Footprint in US Politics

The rise of Indian-origin leaders in American politics highlights how India’s diaspora continues to influence the world’s largest democracy. From grassroots campaigns to leadership roles, these candidates reflect the success stories of migration, education, and cultural pride, connecting India’s values with America’s vision for inclusion and progress.
