Democrat Jay Jones has been declared the winner of the Virginia attorney general election, defeating incumbent Republican Jason Miyares in a surprise win after Jones faced an uproar over leaked violent text messages. His campaign’s apology and message resonated, allowing him to overcome that scandal as a part of this significant victory for Democrats in the closely watched statewide race.
Scandal Over Leaked Messages Amid Virginia Attorney General Election 2025 Campaign
In the final weeks of the campaign, Jones became embroiled in controversy as leaked text messages from 2022 surfaced, in which he fantasized about killing a Republican lawmaker, then-House Speaker Todd Gilbert, and his family. The remarks, published by Newsweek, sent shockwaves through the political landscape and drew bipartisan condemnation. Yet few Democrats called for Jones to drop out, enabling his campaign to remain largely intact.
Republicans had hoped the scandal would sink his chances, believing that the public outrage over the violent remarks would be enough to cost him the election. Instead, it seemed the voters looked past the controversy and delivered Jones one of the night’s most surprising wins.
Jones Apologized Publicly During Virginia Attorney General Election 2025 Campaign
During a debate on October 16 with Miyares, Jones confronted the scandal squarely and clearly apologized for what he said. “Let me be very clear. I am ashamed, I am embarrassed, and I’m sorry,” he said, acknowledging that mistake. “I can only take full accountability and offer my sincere apology, though I cannot take back what I said.”
The controversy had prompted national backlash and a Republican-led campaign urging him to step aside. In return, prominent figures including Donald Trump, J.D. Vance, and House Speaker Mike Johnson all endorsed Miyares. Jones, however, was still able to hold onto Democratic support and refocus the campaign on policy issues important to Virginia voters.
Virginia Attorney General Election 2025 Campaign Built on Policy and Accountability
Jay Jones built his campaign around public safety, consumer protection, and resistance to Trump-era policies such as federal layoffs, tariffs, and National Guard deployments. He emphasized his commitment to defending Virginia’s workers and communities by saying, “I will see Jason Miyares and Donald Trump in court as your next attorney general.”
Jones pointed to his prior work as a Virginia House Delegate from 2018-2021 when he worked on legislation against human trafficking and partnered with the D.C. attorney general’s office to address ghost-gun manufacturers.
A Pivotal Democratic Win in the Attorney General Election 2025
The Virginia attorney general race was viewed as a bellwether for the 2026 midterms-a test of whether voters would decouple personal controversies from political agendas. Despite the late-campaign scandal, Jones’ message of accountability and his opposition to Trump policies helped him secure victory.
J. Miles Coleman, political analyst at Sabato’s Crystal Ball said, “It’s going to be an awfully painful four years,” speaking of how Jones will have many obstacles to overcome during his term while rebuilding trust and credibility. But Jay Jones’ victory is being seen as more significant for Democrats, solidifying their momentum in statewide races and reflecting the desire of voters to look past personal scandals in favor of stability and progress.
