US President Donald Trump has sent a strong message to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu with respect to the West Bank annexation plans. In an interview published by Time magazine on October 23, Trump stated that if Israel attempts to declare its sovereignty over the disputed territories, it would amount to the total cessation of American support.

Trump reiterated his stead fastment with Arab countries “It won’t happen. I gave my word to the Arab countries and Israel would lose all US support if it proceeded with annexation.” This is a watershed moment in US-Israel relations, demonstrating the fragility of US foreign relations and diplomacy in the Middle East.

Knesset Moves Forward on Annexation Bill

The US warning to the Israeli Knesset has given preliminary approval to legislation aimed at asserting control over parts of the West Bank. The Application of Israeli Sovereignty in Judea and Samaria, 2025 bill was approved by a slim margin of 25 to 24 votes this Wednesday.

Initiated by far-right member Avi Maoz, it will now be sent to the Parliament’s Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee for detailed scrutiny with the political process, Hamas and other Palestinian factions have come strong against the motion, hailing it as colonialism. The action further demonstrates Israel’s intentions to consolidate its claims to disputed land against the backdrop of international opposition.

International Reactions & Regional Concerns

The planned annexation has raised concern amongst a few international actors including US Secretary of State Marco Rubio who cautioned that the bill risks undermining an already fragile ceasefire agreement in Gaza. Rubio offered his comments while on a visit to Israel after Vice President JD Vance’s diplomatic engagement in the region stressed that stability must be assured amidst rising tensions. The very prospect of annexation would destabilize the peace effort with further violence and diplomatic consequences within an already fragile arena.

Wider Implications for US-Israel Relations

Trump’s position constitutes a radical break with the preceding protocols whereby US administrations approached Israel, notably that America’s support for Israel is conditional on the observance of certain diplomatic commitments.

For Netanyahu this ultimatum is an indictment of broader geopolitical realities US support is conditional and resting on peace efforts between Israel and its Arab neighbors. Its manifestation is uncertain and how it all plays out highlights the patterns and complexities that complicate alliances and territorial disputes throughout the Middle East. The West Bank annexation will continue to attract global scrutiny, puzzlingly and controversially.
