The FBI has recovered a “high-powered bolt-action rifle” believed to be the weapon used in the shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The discovery was made in the woods near Utah Valley University, FBI agent Robert Bohls announced at a Thursday morning press conference.
Rifle and Evidence Found
Authorities said the rifle was discovered during an intensive search of the area. Investigators also found shoe impressions and a palm print close to the scene.
Bohls confirmed the shooter was not hiding in the woods. “We walked through those woods and secured it,” he said.

He assured the community there was no broader threat. “As to the community, I can tell you that this was a targeted event. We don’t believe the community is at risk. However, we are exhausting every resource to find him, and we will do so,” Bohls told reporters.
What Investigators Know So Far
The FBI shared new details about the manhunt:
- Investigators believe the suspect is male.
- The shooter appears to be of college age and may have blended in with students.
- Authorities have strong video footage of the suspect.
“We’re working through some technologies and some ways to identify this individual,” FBI agent Beau Mason said. “If we are unsuccessful, we will reach out to you as the media, and we will push that publicly to help us identify them. But we are confident in our abilities right now.”
The motive remains unclear. Investigators are analyzing the recovered footwear impression and palm print. Bohls confirmed they had already received more than 130 tips. “Tips are being fully investigated,” he said.
Trump to Honor Charlie Kirk
Former President Donald Trump announced he will posthumously award Charlie Kirk the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor.
“Charlie was a giant of his generation, a champion of liberty and inspiration to millions and millions of people,” Trump said on Thursday. “We miss him greatly.. I have no doubt Charlie’s voice and courage he put into the hearts of countless people, especially young people, will live on.”
