Liverpool striker Diogo Jota has sadly passed away at 28 after a car accident in northern Spain, two weeks since he wed Rute Cardoso. Fire officials in Zamora, Spain, confirmed that two men, 28 and 26 years old, died after their car burst into flames following the accident, the Daily Mail reports.

How the accident occurred

News reports say Jota was behind the wheel of a Lamborghini on the A-52 road in Zamora province, near the border with Portugal, when the vehicle reportedly blew a tyre while overtaking. In the vehicle was also his 26-year-old younger brother, Andre Silva, a professional player with Portuguese club FC Penafiel. The two brothers perished in the tragic accident. Local reports indicate that the Lamborghini skidded off the highway, flipped, and caught fire during the early hours of Thursday morning. Paramedics arrived at the scene immediately. Emergency personnel in the Castilla and Leon area explained the response in a statement: “The 1-1-2 Castilla y León operations centre received multiple calls that reported an automobile accident at Km. 65 of A-52, municipality of Cernadilla, Zamora. One car was said to have crashed and the car caught fire.” They also reported, “1-1-2 alerted the Zamora Traffic Police, Zamora Provincial Council Fire Brigade, and Sacyl Emergency Coordination Center (CCU) from this accident. A Medical Emergency Unit (UME) and the Primary Care Medical Staff (MAP) from the Mombuey Health Center were dispatched from there, who certified two people dead at the scene.” The accident happened along a road commonly used by tourists traveling from northern Portugal towards ports in Santander or Bilbao, or else moving northeast towards France. This tragic accident occurred just weeks following Jota and his wife Rute’s wedding in Porto on 22 June. The parents of three children looked ecstatically happy in their wedding pictures. Jota in what would prove to be his last ever Instagram post, posted just a day earlier than the disaster, called himself “the luckiest man in the world” to have Rute as a wife.
