US President Donald Trump was welcomed in Japan on a Monday (27 October) by heavy showers of pomp as a reflection of the enduring strength of the US- Japan alliance. His first port of call was the Imperial Palace, where he met Emperor Naruhito.

Trump talked with Japan’s new Prime Minister, the first woman this country has ever had the privilege to elect, Sanae Takaichi about key issues. It couldn’t come at a better time, as both countries adjust their positions within an ever-changing economic, political context in Asia.

Sanae Takaichi: New Leader or a Former Ally

Prime Minister Takaichi’s elevation has taken the international scene by storm and Trump was quick to hail her stars. He had phenomenal things to say about her, being close to the now deceased former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who Trump personally called a friend.

“That really helps Japan and the United States,” he told reporters even as he acknowledged Abe’s efforts to cement the strategic partnership between the two nations. Meeting with Takaichi sends a message about continuity in Japanese foreign policy while also signaling the possibility of more progressive inclusive leadership for Tokyo.

Trade, Security & the Future of Cooperation

The main objective of the merchandise trip is to reconfirm the US-Japan partnership in the face of burgeoning regional competition. Trump pointed at his intention to tighten the economic bonds, hoping to highlight the great friendship tying the two countries.

Japan is still one of the most important allies that Washington maintains, as a trading partner and as a strategic reed between China and its propagation in the Indo-Pacific region. The two leaders expect to cover matters concerning trade accords, investment initiatives and joint commitments for defense under the long security alliance.

What is the Future in Asia

The visit comes at a point in his larger tour of Asia, during which he also unveiled investment and trade deals with four Southeast Asian countries. This week, he is also set to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping in South Korea-a meeting that could prove vital in cooling the heated atmosphere between the two countries. “I have got a lot of respect for President Xi, and I think we are going to come away with a deal,” Trump told reporters just before his arrival in Japan.

Trump at a diplomatic level is a kind of traditional yet transitional tone in Tokyo. A symbolic embrace by Japan’s Emperor, a dialogue with its first female leader and renewed conversations on regional economic formative processes. This visit symbolizes the adaptation yet resilient relationship between the US and Japan in an ever-changing world.
