Russian President Vladimir Putin’s second day in New Delhi is packed with official meetings and ceremonial events. This visit holds added importance as it is his first trip to India since the Russia-Ukraine conflict began, giving the two-day programme strong diplomatic significance. Earlier in the day, President Putin laid a wreath at Rajghat and paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi as part of his official schedule.

Breaking away from usual protocol, Prime Minister Narendra Modi personally welcomed President Putin at Delhi’s Palam Technical Airport on Thursday evening. The two leaders greeted each other with a warm hug before sharing an informal car ride to the Prime Minister’s residence at 7, Lok Kalyan Marg for a private dinner. Their friendly interaction brought back memories of their earlier unscripted drive together in Tianjin, China, during the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit.

Putin’s schedule for the day

President Putin’s key engagements for Friday, December 5, are as follows:

  • 11:00 am: Ceremonial welcome at Raj Bhavan

  • 11:30 am: Laying a wreath at Rajghat to honour Mahatma Gandhi

  • 11:50 am: High-level summit meeting with PM Modi at Hyderabad House

  • 1:50 pm: Joint press statements by both leaders

  • 3:40 pm: Participation in a business-focused event (venue yet to be confirmed)

  • 7:00 pm: Meeting with President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan

  • 9:00 pm: Departure from New Delhi

Focus on the 23rd India–Russia Annual Summit

The central highlight of the day will be the Modi–Putin summit at Hyderabad House. Their discussion is expected to cover trade expansion, defence cooperation, and broader regional security issues. These talks reaffirm the strong and long-standing strategic relationship between India and Russia at a time when global alliances are evolving.
