According to the National Centre for Seismology, the earthquake occurred near Nepal at 8:10 PM IST on September 17, 2025, with a magnitude of 4.0.

The focus located at approximately 10 kilometers below the Earth’s surface had a latitude of 2817 N and longitude of 8272 E. Compared to deep shocks which release energy early this shallow earthquake released energy late, causing maximum shaking and resulting in more destruction to buildings and infrastructure.

Why this Shallow Earthquakes Pose Greater Risks?

Earthquakes occurring near the Earth surface cause more severe effects than those at a greater depth. This is because seismic waves dissipate energy while traveling upward and deeper earthquakes tend to dissipate their effect by the time they reach the vicinity of the population. The shallow earthquakes impart more intense ground motions and frequently leading to significant structural damage and higher human casualty risks.

What are Earthquake Effects?

Shaking from even moderate earthquakes such as the present, accompanied by panic among the inhabitants and tiny damages of capacity due to vulnerable types of construction, is being felt. Effects can vary from cracked walls to interference with daily activities, depending really on regional preparedness and construction practices.

No significant loss of lives or extent of destruction has been reported to date. The psychological impact and fear instilled in people from such tremors might be huge with communities that are still trying to recover from the previous major earthquakes.

When was the Last Earthquake in Nepal?

The last Earthquake occur on September 10, 2025, at 15:42 IST with magnitude 3.0 and the major for Nepal was that of the January 7, 2025, earthquake of magnitude 7.0 near Dinggye, Tibet Autonomous Region of China. This strong quake wounded 13 people in Nepal, with two of the dewy being named after.

Nepal & Their Vulnerability Brought by Tectonic Activity

Nepal has seismically active zones, along with a convergent boundary where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates collide. The ongoing collision builds pressure and stress on the Earth’s crust released in an earthquake. It is a subduction zone where the Indian Plate is being forced below the Eurasian Plate and more seismic tension.

Nepal has seen a rather rich history for numerous major earthquakes, among the most infamous being the notorious 2015 episode that had destruction written all over it.
