Government modeling provides a bleak scenario of what another offshore megaquake could do in the Hokkaido-Sanriku zone: a tsunami as high as 30 metres could inundate coastal towns, over 2,20,000 buildings could be destroyed and economic losses could approach 31 trillion yen.

Casualties could reach to almost two lakh and thousands could face cold-related health emergencies if it happens in winter. The latest advisory encompasses 182 municipalities, making it one of the broadest alerts in years.

This week’s warning is much more specific than the general alert issued in 2024 for a potential Nankai Trough earthquake that caused panic buying and cancellations of events because of its vagueness.
With clearer guidance and target areas this time, Japan’s Meteorological Agency expects residents to take preparation calmly and effectively.
