Gun Battle Breaks Out Outside Mosque, One Fatality, One Injured
A peaceful Friday night in Orebro, Sweden, turned deadly as shots were fired outside the Orebro Mosque, killing one man and leaving another seriously injured. Police have confirmed the shooting was probably related to existing gang feuds but stressed that no connection to the mosque itself existed. The injured victim was taken to hospital, officials refusing to indicate the extent of his injuries.
Suspect on the Run as Probe Increases
Police report at least one suspect was spotted escaping the scene, yet no one has been arrested. The shooting is under investigation as murder and attempted murder. Authorities characterized the shooting as related to “the criminal network environment,” without issuing any further details. Sweden has struggled with over a decade of increasing gang violence, with fatal shootings now some of the highest in Europe. Notwithstanding this, the nation’s general rate of murder is still similar to its European counterparts.

A City Still Scarred by February’s Mass Shooting
This most recent bloodshed follows only months after Orebro suffered Sweden’s worst gun attack in February, in which 10 students and teachers were killed by a former student before he took his own life. That incident was not gang-related, and officials determined no apparent motive. For locals, the new wave of violence has brought back painful memories and stoked fears that Orebro is turning into an epicenter of Sweden’s gun problem.
