Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama expressed profound sorrow over the tragic loss of lives in a powerful earthquake that struck Dingri County in Tibet on Tuesday. The 6.8-magnitude quake caused extensive destruction, killing at least 95 people and injuring 130 others.
The earthquake hit Dingri county in Xigaze, Tibet Autonomous Region, at 9:05 am Beijing Time, according to regional disaster relief authorities. Tremors from the quake were strong enough to shake buildings and send residents fleeing into the streets in neighboring Nepal. The US Geological Survey reported the earthquake’s magnitude as 7.1.
Dalai Lama Offers Prayers for Victims
In a heartfelt message, the Dalai Lama conveyed his grief over the tragedy. “I am deeply saddened by the devastating earthquake that struck Dingri in Tibet and the surrounding regions this morning,” he stated.
He mourned the significant loss of life, injuries, and the widespread destruction of homes and property. “I offer my prayers for those who have lost their lives and extend my wishes for a swift recovery to all who have been injured,” the Dalai Lama added.

The earthquake left a trail of destruction in Dingri county. Consequently, the earthquake displaced many families and severely impacted essential infrastructure. Meanwhile, regional disaster relief teams have been working tirelessly to manage rescue operations and provide much-needed aid to those affected.
