Science and Symbolism of the Blood Moon

For centuries, Blood Moons have created myth, with most cultures connecting the red colour with transformation or change. The effect is explained through Rayleigh scattering in modern science the same mechanism that reddens sunsets. When Earth’s atmosphere scatters light, only longer red wavelengths pass through to reach the Moon, which is reddened.

This eclipse is extra special because it happens only days before the Moon comes nearest to the earth, its closest point to our planet. So, the Moon will be a little bigger than normal, shining that much deeper and darker red than in many eclipses.
