Nepal is seeing one of its biggest youth-led protests in years. What began as anger over a social media ban soon grew into a massive movement against corruption and old-style politics. The protests were so strong that Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak and PM KP Sharma Oli resigned.
At the heart of it all is Sudan Gurung, a 36-year-old activist and head of the NGO Hami Nepal. His personal story, activism, and leadership have made him the main face of Nepal’s Gen Z protest.
Who is Sudan Gurung?
Sudan Gurung calls himself an activist and philanthropist. He has been helping people during disasters for more than 10 years. His life changed after he lost his child in a deadly earthquake. That tragedy pushed him into relief work and social service.
Through Hami Nepal, Gurung has helped earthquake survivors, flood victims, and people in need during crises. His NGO became known for being quick, transparent, and focused on people’s needs.

Hami Nepal’s Role in the Protests
One of the main organiszers of the September protests was Hami Nepal. The NGO posted inspirational messages, safety advice, and protest routes on social media. Many of these were directed at students, offering advice and protest routes on social media. Many of these were directed at students, offering advice on how to participate in the demonstrations while remaining safe.
Gurung often repeats the motto of his NGO: “For the people, by the people.” He has also said, “It’s time the new generation steps up and challenges the old ways of running the country. You can do anything as long as you have the willpower.”
These words struck a chord with young Nepalis, who are tired of corruption and lack of opportunities in the country.
Symbol for Nepal’s New Generation
Sudan Gurung is more than just a protest leader. He has become a symbol of how Nepal’s Gen Z wants to change. His leadership shows the strength of grassroots movements, where NGOs and social media are more effective than traditional politics.

Sudan Gurung has shown that genuine change can also emerge from outside political parties by motivating thousands of young people. He is a symbol of courage, optimism, and a fresh start for many.
Protests Disrupt Kathmandu Airport
The protests also affected daily life in Nepal. On Tuesday, smoke from protest fires forced the partial closure of Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport.
“Arrivals of planes from the southern side were halted due to poor visibility caused by smoke,” aviation authority official Gyanendra Bhul told Reuters.
Several Indian flights were delayed, and flight-tracking data showed multiple planes circling above Kathmandu before being diverted.
What’s Next for Nepal?
With KP Sharma Oli stepping down, Nepal’s politics has reached a turning point. Sudan Gurung’s rise shows how young people and NGOs are shaping the country’s future.
Whether this youth-led fervour will eventually fade into another protest wave or transform into true political reform is the crucial question at hand.
