Bangladesh witnessed a major political moment on Thursday as the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) acting chairman, Tarique Rahman, returned home after nearly 17 years in exile. His arrival marks a turning point for the opposition party at a time of deep political uncertainty in the country.

Rahman, the son of former prime minister Khaleda Zia, has lived in London since 2008. He stayed away from Bangladesh following multiple criminal convictions, including money laundering and charges linked to an alleged plot to assassinate former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, who has since been ousted.

His return has drawn nationwide attention and strong reactions from supporters and political observers.

Who Is Tarique Rahman?

Tarique Rahman is one of the most influential figures in BNP politics. He assumed the role of acting chairman while living abroad as his mother faced serious health issues and legal challenges.

For years, BNP leaders have projected Rahman as the party’s key strategist and future leader. His return is widely seen as a signal that the party is preparing for a more active political role on the ground.

Tarique Rahman’s Schedule in Dhaka

After landing at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, Rahman is set to receive a formal welcome from senior BNP leaders. Party officials have planned a carefully structured itinerary.

He will travel through the July Expressway, where he is expected to greet supporters and acknowledge party workers. Rahman is also scheduled to address the nation, marking his first public political message from Bangladesh in nearly two decades.

Later, he will visit Evercare Hospital to see his ailing mother, Khaleda Zia. From there, he will proceed to his residence in Gulshan-2, passing through key city routes.

Family Joins Historic Return

Rahman did not return alone. He traveled with his wife, Zubaida Rahman, and their daughter, Zaima Rahman. The family departed from London on a regular Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight, marking a symbolic family reunion on Bangladeshi soil.

Their arrival has added emotional weight to the moment for BNP supporters, many of whom have waited years to see the family return.

Supporters Brave Cold and Fog

Thousands of BNP supporters gathered across parts of Dhaka to welcome their leader. Many arrived late Wednesday night despite cold weather and dense fog.

In several areas, roads are filled with party flags, slogans, and banners. Supporters sat along streets for hours, waiting for a glimpse of Rahman. Party insiders said activists travelled from different districts to be part of the homecoming.

Why This Return Matters Now

Rahman’s return comes amid ongoing political unrest and growing pressure on Bangladesh’s political institutions. Analysts see this moment as a strategic reset for the BNP.

With its top leader now back in the country, the party gains renewed momentum. Rahman’s presence could reshape opposition politics and influence future elections.

The coming days will reveal how active Rahman plans to be in day-to-day politics. Supporters expect him to take a stronger leadership role and rebuild the party organisation at the grassroots level.

For now, his return alone has shifted the political conversation in Bangladesh.
