Nepal’s political crisis deepened on Tuesday as Gen Z-led protests against corruption entered their second day. The demonstrations turned violent with ministers’ homes targeted, a minister’s resignation, and Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli calling for an all-party meeting to address the unrest.

Minister’s Residence Set on Fire

Protesters set fire to the private residence of Communications and Information Technology Minister Prithvi Subba Gurung in Sunakothi, The Himalayan Times reported. The incident highlighted the growing anger among demonstrators who accuse leaders of corruption and misuse of power.

The violence spread to the homes of other top officials. Protesters pelted stones at the residences of Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Bishnu Paudel and Nepal Rastra Bank Governor Biswo Paudel. They also attacked the house of former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak.

Ban on Apps Withdrawn

Despite the unrest, social media platforms returned online in Nepal on Tuesday morning. Reuters confirmed that all previously banned apps, including Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, were accessible again.

Minister Prithvi Subba Gurung confirmed the decision. “We have withdrawn the shutdown of social media. They are working now,” he said.

Amid mounting pressure, Water Supply Minister Pradeep Yadav resigned from his post. Yadav said he could not continue in government after the deaths of 19 people during Monday’s protest.

According to Annapurna Post, Yadav stated that he was “not fit to serve” in the aftermath of the deadly crackdown.

Security Forces Under Attack

In Kathmandu, protesters clashed with security personnel. Demonstrators chased officers and pelted stones, as frustration boiled over. The protests are driven largely by young citizens demanding an end to corruption and accountability from the Oli government.

PM Oli Calls All-Party Meeting

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli addressed the nation, urging calm and dialogue. He announced an all-party meeting scheduled for 6 pm on Tuesday.

Oli said, “I am in dialogue with the relevant parties to assess the situation and find a meaningful conclusion. For that, I have also called an all-party meeting at 6 pm today. I humbly request all brothers and sisters to remain calm in this difficult situation.”

Fresh Violence in Kathmandu

Violence again erupted in Kathmandu as protesters returned to the streets. Demonstrators blocked roads and raised slogans against the government, demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Oli.

The protests erupted after the government’s attempt to ban social media platforms, which many saw as an attack on free speech. Though the ban was lifted, anger over corruption and governance remains.

With one minister already resigning, homes of senior leaders attacked, and security forces under siege, Nepal faces one of its most serious political crises in recent years. The outcome of Oli’s all-party meeting may decide whether the unrest continues or a path to resolution emerges.
