The UN has raised an alarm over the deadly protests in Nepal, where several people have been killed and hundreds injured. UN Human Rights Chief Volker Turk said he was “appalled” by the recent violence and urged both the government and protesters to show restraint.
He stressed that dialogue and accountability are the only ways to address the frustration of young Nepalis demanding change.
UN Chief Calls for Restraint from Security Forces
In a statement, Turk strongly criticised the excessive use of force by Nepali security personnel.
“I plead with security forces to exercise utmost restraint and avoid further such bloodshed and harm… Violence is not the answer,” he said. Turk added that reports of unnecessary and disproportionate force must be investigated quickly and fairly.
“I have received concerning reports of unnecessary and disproportionate use of force by the security forces… I call for an urgent, thorough, transparent and impartial investigation into such acts,” he said.

UN – Violence on Both Sides Raises Concerns
The UN chief expressed concern over reports of arson, vandalism, and physical attacks during the protests. “I am disturbed by reports of public buildings, businesses and private residences being attacked and, in some instances, set ablaze. Equally, I am concerned by reports of physical attacks on senior government officials,” Turk said.
