Prime Minister Narendra Modi landed in Malé on Friday to a ceremonial welcome by Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu and his key cabinet ministers. This visit of PM Modi marks a significant diplomatic moment between India and the Maldives. This is Modi’s first visit to the island nation since President Muizzu took office in November 2023 and is seen as a diplomatic breakthrough amid recent tensions in the bilateral relationship.
President Muizzu himself welcomed the Indian Prime Minister at the Malé International Airport, where children gave a welcome dance performance. Among the dignitaries who attended the reception were ministers in charge of major portfolios — foreign affairs, defence, finance, and homeland security — underscoring the significance of the visit.
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri has asserted that this is the first state visit by any foreign head of government under the new government of the Maldives, reflecting the intensified diplomatic engagement. The Prime Minister’s two-day visit is intended to reset relations and push cooperation in economic development, maritime security, and regional stability.
India-Maldives to Emphasize Maritime and Economic Security
During his visit, Modi will have high-level talks with President Muizzu and other political figures of the Maldives. The two countries will outline a roadmap for a Comprehensive Economic and Maritime Security Partnership, an important pillar of regional strategy in the Indian Ocean.
In a departure statement, PM Modi stated, “This year also commemorates the 60th anniversary of the establishment of our two countries’ diplomatic relations.” He further stated, “I look forward to my meetings with President Muizzu and other political leadership, to pursue our shared vision of a Comprehensive Economic and Maritime Security Partnership, and to enhance our cooperation for peace, prosperity, and stability in the Indian Ocean Region.”
Modi to Attend Maldives’ Independence Day, Launch India-Aided Projects
PM Modi will be the guest of honour at the Maldives’ Independence Day celebrations on July 26, further cementing India’s role as a strategic partner. He is also expected to inaugurate a series of India-assisted infrastructure and development projects that reflect New Delhi’s commitment to regional development.
Modi landed in the Maldives after wrapping up a substantial two-day trip to the United Kingdom, during which India and the UK agreed on a historical free trade agreement. The deal is intended to increase bilateral trade by eliminating tariffs on major exports such as automobiles, whisky, and textiles.
