External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar arrived in Dhaka on Wednesday to attend the state funeral of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Khaleda Zia. His visit represents India’s official homage to one of Bangladesh’s most influential political leaders. Zia passed away at the age of 80 after a prolonged illness, leaving behind a long and complex political legacy. Thousands of people gathered in the capital to pay their final respects.

Jaishankar traveled to Dhaka to participate in the funeral ceremony and express India’s condolences. The event was held with state honours, reflecting Khaleda Zia’s importance in the country’s modern political history.

Meeting With Tarique Rahman Highlights Diplomatic Gesture

After arriving, Jaishankar met Tarique Rahman, the acting chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Khaleda Zia’s son. He handed over a personal letter from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. On his social media post, Jaishankar wrote:

“On arrival in Dhaka, met with Mr Tarique Rahman, Acting Chairman of BNP and son of former PM of Bangladesh Begum Khaleda Zia. Handed over to him a personal letter from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.”

He added, “Conveyed deepest condolences on behalf of the Government and people of India.”

Thousands Attend Funeral as Bangladesh Mourns Former PM

The funeral drew large crowds in Dhaka, including citizens, political leaders, and international dignitaries. Bangladesh declared a period of state mourning, and the city observed a public holiday. Many mourners remembered her role as a pioneering female leader who shaped the country’s political scene.

Khaleda Zia was the first woman to serve as Bangladesh’s prime minister. She held office three times and led the Bangladesh Nationalist Party for decades. Zia played a key role in returning the country to democratic governance after periods of military influence. Her political career included both strong support and rivalries.

India’s Condolences and PM Modi’s Tribute

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his grief over Zia’s passing. He recalled their previous meeting and highlighted her contribution to Bangladesh’s progress and regional cooperation. Modi said he hoped her vision would continue to guide India-Bangladesh relations.

Zia’s funeral took place with full state honours. She was laid to rest beside her husband, former president Ziaur Rahman, following Islamic traditions. The ceremony took place under tight security and included participation from local and international leaders.

Diplomatic Significance of Jaishankar’s Visit

Jaishankar’s presence reflects India’s respect for Bangladesh’s leadership and people. The visit demonstrates shared history and mutual respect, even amid occasional political differences.

The interactions during the funeral may shape future diplomatic dialogue. Bangladesh is approaching key elections, and regional political developments are closely watched. India’s outreach through Jaishankar underscores its commitment to cooperation and stability in South Asia.
