Former Supreme Court judge Sushila Karki, 73, who was chosen by Nepal’s Gen Z protesters to lead the country after the government’s fall, spoke warmly about India on Wednesday. She highlighted her memories of Banaras and the Ganga during an interview with News18.
“I greet Modi ji. I have a good impression about Modi ji,” Karki said, responding to a question about her expectations from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. She added, “I am very much impressed with Indian leaders. We consider them as our own brothers and sisters.”
Fond Memories of Banaras and Ganga
Karki recalled her student days at Banaras Hindu University, where she completed her master’s degree. “I still remember my teachers, friends. I still remember the river Ganga. Beside the Ganga, there was a hostel. And at night in the summer, we would sleep on the terrace,” she said.

She also shared in Hindi, “I am a citizen of Biratnagar, near the border of India. Maybe from my house, India is only 25 miles away.” Karki said she often visited the local market across the border.
Assuring Safety and Restoring Order
Karki promised that Indians living in Nepal would be safe. She said the army has restored order in the country. She also added that the families of those who died in the protests would get justice.
Protests and Political Change
The protests started after the government suddenly banned social media. Young people, frustrated with unemployment, corruption, and political problems, took to the streets. Clashes with security forces left at least 25 people dead.
The unrest led to Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli resigning. Now, Gen Z groups are supporting Karki to lead the country, marking a historic youth-led change in Nepalese politics.
Karki’s connection with India, her memories of Banaras and the Ganga, and her positive comments about Indian leaders show the strong cultural and geographic ties between the two countries.
