A violent incident in Dhaka’s Moghbazar area on Wednesday evening left one person dead after a crude bomb was thrown from a flyover, police said. The explosion happened near the Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangsad site, a crowded part of the city, around 7 pm.

Witnesses saw the explosive device land and detonate on the road below, injuring a passerby who later died at the scene. Residents nearby said the blast shocked the neighbourhood and immediately drew police to seal off the area for investigation.

Dhaka Crude Bomb Attack: Victim Identified as Local Youth

The man killed in the blast has been identified as Siam, a 24-year-old who worked at a private shop under the flyover. He was reportedly out for tea when the bomb struck him.

Another report named the victim Saiful, saying he was at a roadside stall when the bomb hit him. Police confirmed the explosion from above and said investigators are working to determine who threw the bomb and why.

Police Investigate Motive and Suspects

Law enforcement officials cordoned off the scene soon after the blast. They collected evidence and began speaking to eyewitnesses. The motive for the attack remains unclear, and no arrests have been announced yet.

Investigators are reviewing CCTV footage and gathering forensic clues to find the suspects involved. Authorities are also looking for potential links to past crude bomb incidents in the city—such as recent blasts near other busy areas—although police have not confirmed any connection.

Pattern of Crude Bomb Incidents in Dhaka

Crude bomb blasts have occurred in various parts of Dhaka this year, including near St Mary’s Cathedral in Kakrail and at multiple busy spots in the city. In one recent case, two crude bombs exploded near an office, though no one was hurt.

These attacks have raised concerns about public safety and the presence of explosive devices in crowded urban areas. Police have been increasing patrols and urging residents to report suspicious activities.

Panic Among Locals

After the blast, panic spread among people in Moghbazar. Many nearby shops and homes saw residents rushing outside, unsure about further danger. Traffic stalled as police blocked key roads to preserve the crime scene and collect evidence.

Local business owners said they were shocked by the violence, especially in a location that many commuters use daily. Calls for better surveillance and security have grown louder since the incident.

Calls for Stronger Safety Measures

Safety experts and community leaders have urged authorities to step up efforts to prevent explosive attacks in busy public areas. They say more security cameras, increased police patrols, and stricter checks under flyovers could help deter future incidents.

Some residents also want public awareness campaigns to educate citizens about spotting and reporting suspicious objects before they can cause harm.

Response From Police Officials

Police have promised a full investigation and assured the public that they will try to find those responsible. The local police inspector said officers are examining all leads and working with bomb disposal experts to understand exactly how the device was made and deployed.

Authorities have appealed to anyone with information, including mobile footage from the scene, to come forward.

Impact on City Traffic and Commuters

The explosion disrupted traffic in the Moghbazar area for several hours. Commuters found alternate routes as the main road remained cordoned off. Some bus services reported delays due to the police barricade.

City officials said normal traffic resumed only after officers cleared the area and completed the initial stages of the investigation.
