A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 6.7 on the Richter scale hit off Indonesia’s Tanimbar Islands on Monday, the nation’s geophysics agency stated. The agency said the quake was at a depth of 98 km (60.89 miles) and explained that there was no tsunami warning.
In the meantime, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) offered slightly varying figures, reporting that the quake had 6.8 magnitude and was considerably shallower, at a depth of 10 km (6.21 miles).
Shaking from the quake was reported in a number of tiny towns in eastern Indonesia, the agency said. Indonesia’s disaster mitigation agency, though, said there were no reports of damage in these regions.
Indonesia lies on the ‘Pacific Ring of Fire’, a volatile zone where multiple tectonic plates meet, making the region highly prone to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
