After the United States, China has now also claimed that it helped calm tensions between India and Pakistan. On Tuesday, Beijing said it played a part in “mediating” between the two countries earlier this year, months after a serious military standoff in May 2025.
The statement was made by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi during a discussion in Beijing on global affairs and China’s foreign relations.
What China Said About Global Conflicts
While speaking at the event, Wang said the world is facing a sharp increase in violence and instability. He pointed out that local wars and cross-border conflicts are now happening more often than at any time since the end of World War II. He also said geopolitical uncertainty is spreading across many regions.
Wang claimed that China had followed what he called an “objective and just stance” when dealing with international disputes.
China Claims It Played a Role in India-Pakistan Tensions
Wang said China had been involved in resolving several international issues. These included northern Myanmar, the Iranian nuclear issue, tensions between Pakistan and India, the conflict between Palestine and Israel, and recent tensions between Cambodia and Thailand.
“Following this Chinese approach to settling hotspot issues, we mediated in northern Myanmar, the Iranian nuclear issue, the tensions between Pakistan and India, the issues between Palestine and Israel, and the recent conflict between Cambodia and Thailand,” Wang Yi said.
Background of the India-Pakistan Military Standoff
China’s claim comes months after India and Pakistan were involved in a military confrontation triggered by a terror attack in Pahalgam on April 22. After the attack, India launched Operation Sindoor to strike terror bases in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The operation was later widened to target military facilities as well.
India Rejects Third-Party Mediation
India has consistently rejected any foreign involvement in its disputes with Pakistan. New Delhi has clearly stated that the confrontation between May 7 and May 10 was settled through direct military-level talks between the two countries, without any outside help.
India has maintained that all matters related to Pakistan are handled bilaterally.
Trump’s Earlier Mediation Claims
China’s statement comes after US President Donald Trump also made repeated claims that he had mediated between India and Pakistan. India strongly rejected those claims.
Wang’s remarks mark the second time in recent months that a major world power has said it helped ease tensions between the two South Asian neighbours, even though India has repeatedly made its position clear that no third party was involved.
