New Delhi: Up to 300 Indian undergraduate students every year will get a fully funded opportunity to undertake research internships at leading Canadian universities from 2027.
The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) opened applications for the Mitacs Globalink Research Internship programme on Wednesday.
The programme follows a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between AICTE and Canada’s Mitacs.
Under the agreement, up to 300 students annually will undertake 12-week research internships at leading Canadian universities for three years beginning in 2027.
Applications opened on August 5 and will remain open until September 16. The selected students will undergo a screening and matching process before being placed with faculty members at participating Canadian universities.
The internships will be conducted between May and October 2027.
Eligible candidates must be at least 18 years old, enrolled in a full-time undergraduate or integrated undergraduate-master’s programme, and have completed at least two years of study, or be in their second year at the time of application.
Applicants must also apply for a minimum of three and a maximum of 10 research projects across at least three Canadian provinces.
The internships are open to students from disciplines including engineering, computer science, physical sciences, life sciences, mathematics, business, social sciences, arts and humanities.
The AICTE-Mitacs partnership was announced following the India-Canada agreement to expand cooperation in higher education, research and academic mobility during Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s visit to India earlier this year.
Launching the programme, AICTE Chairman Yogesh Singh said the initiative would enable Indian students to “work with leading researchers in Canada, gain exposure to cutting-edge research ecosystems and develop global competencies essential for the knowledge economy.”
