During a closed-door plenary session at the BRICS Summit in Kazan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized that “India supports dialogue and diplomacy… and not war.” He conveyed this message while addressing the challenges faced by the bloc and the broader world.
On Tuesday, Modi had previously told Russian President Vladimir Putin, whose country is engaged in a conflict with Ukraine, that “all conflict can be solved with dialogue.” Today, he reiterated the need for action to address pressing global issues.
“Our gathering occurs at a time when the world is confronted with numerous urgent challenges, including the widening North-South and East-West divides. We must prioritize preventing inflation and ensuring food, energy, health, and water security,” he stated. Modi also highlighted new technological challenges, such as misinformation and cyber fraud.
He noted the high expectations placed on the BRICS grouping, asserting that it can play a positive role in addressing these concerns through a diverse and inclusive platform. “Our approach must remain people-centric. We need to convey that BRICS is not divisive, and we stand for dialogue and diplomacy, not war,” he said.
Reflecting on the collaboration during the COVID-19 pandemic, Modi expressed confidence that, just as BRICS overcame that crisis, the group could work towards securing a strong and prosperous future.
He also addressed the global fight against terrorism, stressing the importance of united efforts to counteract terror financing and radicalization among youth. “We need unwavering support from all countries and must eliminate double standards regarding this serious issue,” he declared.
Regarding the inclusion of new partner countries—Egypt, Iran, Ethiopia, and the UAE—Modi welcomed them and noted that this “extended family” was convening for the first time. He emphasized that decisions should be made by consensus, adhering to the guiding principles established at the Johannesburg Summit.
Modi concluded by expressing gratitude to President Putin for hosting the summit and for his leadership of BRICS over the past year.
