“Your money is being wasted,” Musk told the crowd, promising to “get the government off your back and out of your pocketbook.”

Elon Musk’s appearance at Donald Trump’s rally at Madison Square Garden in New York City with his young son, X Æ A-Xii, has stirred both intrigue and discussion about his political allegiance. Musk, one of Trump’s prominent supporters and a major donor, brought X Æ A-Xii to the rally wearing a personalized “Make Voting Great Again” hat, which garnered significant social media attention. Holding a “Trump Vance” sign that also included his father’s name, the four-year-old stood beside his father in an event that one fan on X (formerly Twitter) described as “The Musks are all in,” adding to the buzz surrounding their presence.

At the rally, Musk took to the stage to advocate a drastic $2 trillion cut in federal spending, a proposal he said would help reduce “wasted” government expenditures. “Your money is being wasted,” Musk declared to a crowd of 20,000, promising that if Trump were elected, he would “get the government off your back and out of your pocketbook” through extensive budget reforms. Musk’s plan for a $2 trillion reduction in federal spending would entail eliminating around a third of current expenditures, a substantial shift in policy that has garnered both support and skepticism.

Musk, who has personally contributed over $132 million to support Trump and other Republican candidates, is also expected to lead a new “Department of Government Efficiency” (DOGE), a play on the cryptocurrency Dogecoin that Musk has publicly endorsed. This hypothetical department, proposed by Trump, would focus on reducing unnecessary government spending, with Musk at the helm. While some have lauded Musk’s involvement as a step toward economic reform, critics argue that his leadership in the department would present conflicts of interest. Tesla and SpaceX, Musk’s companies, have received billions in federal contracts and subsidies, adding complexity to his advocacy for cuts in government spending.

In a spirited exchange on stage, Cantor Fitzgerald’s Howard Lutnick challenged Musk on the feasibility of his proposed cuts. Musk confidently responded, “You think we can rip out this wasted $6.5 trillion Biden budget? Well, I think we can do at least $2 trillion, yeah,” doubling down on his commitment to aggressive cost reductions. Supporters in the audience cheered Musk’s comments, while opponents have criticized these promises as potentially detrimental to vital programs that benefit middle- and lower-income Americans.

Adding to the political tension, the Harris campaign responded sharply to Musk’s endorsement of Trump, claiming that Trump’s policies primarily benefit “self-obsessed rich guys who will sell out the middle class.” They released clips of Trump praising Musk for firing workers during a strike, downplaying climate threats, and suggesting that the Department of Education might be unnecessary. Despite these criticisms, Trump continues to promote Musk’s budget-cutting vision, indicating it aligns with his broader agenda of deregulation, tax reduction, and increased tariffs, which he claims would boost domestic manufacturing despite economists warning of rising consumer costs due to tariffs.

Musk’s appearance with his family at the rally, particularly his son’s interactions with former First Lady Melania Trump, added a personal touch to the event. Videos and photos of X Æ A-Xii interacting with both his father and Melania have gone viral, with one user commenting, “Little, little X is adorable! #MAGA.” Another noted, “What a wonderful moment for Maye too. She has to be so proud of her son,” referencing Musk’s mother, Maye Musk, who was also present.

As Musk’s political involvement grows, his role as a high-profile Trump ally signifies a unique intersection of technology, finance, and politics. His public backing and considerable donations to Trump’s campaign underscore a shift in his influence, extending beyond business and into shaping national policy.
