Israeli airstrikes in Gaza killed at least 26 people on Saturday. This occurred amid the resumption of negotiations between Israel and Hamas in Qatar, focusing on a ceasefire and the release of hostages.
Resumed Negotiations
Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz confirmed that indirect negotiations with Hamas resumed on Saturday in Qatar. These talks are primarily aimed at securing the release of hostages taken during the October 2023 attacks. Katz informed the family of Israeli soldier Liri Albag that efforts are actively underway to free the hostages. “Efforts are underway to free the hostages, notably the Israeli delegation which left yesterday (Friday) for negotiations in Qatar,” his office said.
Focus of Talks
Hamas revealed that the discussions would focus on a complete cessation of hostilities and the withdrawal of Israeli forces. However, no further updates have been shared since the talks began. A key hurdle remains Israel’s reluctance to agree to a permanent ceasefire.
Casualties and Strikes
Meanwhile, Gaza’s Health Ministry reported at least 59 deaths and over 270 injuries in the past 24 hours as a result of Israeli airstrikes. This surge in casualties coincides with a continued increase in Israeli operations in Gaza. According to the Health Ministry, the total number of Palestinian deaths has now surpassed 45,700, with women and children accounting for more than half of the fatalities.
Pressure for Ceasefire
As the death toll rises, international pressure for a ceasefire intensifies. Families of hostages have been holding weekly rallies, urging Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu to reach a ceasefire agreement. In a video released by Hamas, hostage Liri Albag, speaking under duress, shared her anguish after being held captive for 450 days.
Ongoing Destruction and Displacement
The ongoing conflict has displaced nearly 90% of Gaza’s 2.3 million residents. As a result, many are now living in tents along the seacoast. With winter now setting in, hundreds of thousands of displaced individuals are struggling to cope with the cold. Tragically, a small number of children have already succumbed to the harsh conditions.
