Nowadays, many couples desire to be parents and want a child. But many have doubts regarding the IVF or the prevailing Act- ART.

Hence to clear the doubts, check out what the ART law says and how this law ensures, that the couple can safely & securely plan their journey ahead via IVF.

While, talking about the IVF with HT Lifestyle, the consultant infertility expert at Pune’s NOVA IVF Fertility Dr Bharati Dhorepatil revealed, that there are many couples who don’t conceive in a natural manner to several factors. These factors usually include Late pregnancy planning, lifestyle choices, obesity, compulsive smoking or drinking, endometriosis, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), blockage in fallopian tube and low sperm quality etc. As a result, the couples aren’t able to conceive.

Later, speaking in Favour of IVF Dr Bharati said, despite In-vitro fertilization being exhausting in nature, it is still worth it, as parents will get to witness & experience the joy of having a baby.

Speaking about the process, Dr Bharati said, ‘IVF is a type of assisted reproductive technology (ART) that consists of combining eggs and sperm outside the womb in a laboratory dish. Later the fertilized eggs, also called embryos are implanted in the uterus to develop into a fetus. It might take time around two to three weeks and includes a series of processes and steps such as ovulation induction, retrieving egg, sperm collection, fertilization, embryo development, embryo transfer, luteal phase and at last pregnancy test.’

Why ART Law Is Needed?

Meanwhile, while talking about In-vitro fertilization and its process, Dr Dhorepatil also cleared some air about Assisted reproductive technology (ART) Act.

Speaking about this law, she revealed, that Assisted reproductive technology (ART) act usually regulates the use of medical treatments like IVF. The aim of this law is to ensure that the treatment or procedure is conducted under secure and ethical circumstances.

It makes the sperm/egg banks, who are providing these procedures to adhere to some rules & regulations regarding the standards of the given service. Usually, these banks are supposed to registered under Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).

In addition, it also ensures that the services are easily provided to people belonging to various geographical locations.

Eligibility Criteria For Accessing IVF: As per the act, the age group for accessing IVF is 21 to 50 years for women and 26 to 55 years for men. These limitations have been imposed due to factors like decreasing fertility with age and state of health.

Besides IVF, it includes other treatments like ICSI (Intracytoplasmic sperm injection), PGD (Preimplantation genetic diagnosis) and assistance for donor.
