Ethan Guo, a 19-year-old American influencer who set out to raise money for childhood cancer research by flying to all seven continents, has been stranded in Antarctica since June after making an unauthorized landing in Chilean territory, according to The Independent.
Guo, who gained attention last year for his record attempt to become the youngest solo pilot to reach every continent, allegedly provided false flight plan data before landing his Cessna 182Q at a Chilean base in Antarctica.
Charges and Conditional Dismissal
Prosecutors said Guo’s approved flight path allowed him to fly over Punta Arenas, but he instead diverted farther south to Antarctica. He was charged on June 29 with giving false information to air traffic control and landing without permission.
On Monday, a Chilean judge dismissed the charges after a deal was struck requiring Guo to:
-
Donate $30,000 to a children’s cancer foundation within 30 days.
-
Leave Chile immediately after his departure is approved.
-
Stay out of Chile for three years.
He must also cover all expenses related to the security of his plane, his personal upkeep during the stay, and his eventual return trip.

Stranded by Antarctic Winter
Guo has spent six weeks at a Chilean military base since being charged. While not under arrest, he was required to remain in Chilean territory. Harsh Antarctic winter conditions have prevented any flights, leaving both him and his aircraft grounded.
Chilean prosecutor Cristián Crisoto told reporters that Guo’s plane “does not have the capabilities to make a flight” but declined to elaborate. Guo said he is consulting his lawyer to determine if he can continue his journey by air.
“I remain in Antarctica awaiting approval for my departure flight,” Guo told the Associated Press. “I sincerely hope they give it to me soon so that I and my plane can continue with my original mission.”
