Watch: Anganwadi Workers Removing Eggs From Children’s Plates After Photo; 2 Suspended

In Karnataka’s Koppal district, two Anganwadi workers have been suspended following allegations that they removed eggs from children’s plates during a midday meal, with the incident captured in video and photographs. The footage, which went viral on social media, prompted swift action from authorities.

See the video here:

The suspended workers, Lakshmi and Shainasa Begum, were filmed by an employee who documented the removal of eggs from the children’s lunch bowls. The video clearly shows an egg being placed in a child’s bowl and then taken out later. The viral spread of this video led to widespread outrage online.

Reports indicate that the workers filmed and photographed the eggs being served to the children before removing them during the meal. Eggs are a required part of the midday meal in government schools and Anganwadis.

On August 9, the Women and Child Development Department suspended the workers pending further investigation for neglecting their responsibilities, according to PTI.

Karnataka Women and Child Development Minister Laxmi Hebbalkar confirmed that immediate action was taken once the incident was reported. She directed officials to not only suspend the workers but also to address the situation with the Child Development Project Officer of Koppal and issue a notice to the Deputy Director of the district.

The minister underscored the critical need for nutritious food and equal educational opportunities in Anganwadis, stating that any injustice towards underprivileged children would not be tolerated. She also warned that those found guilty of such actions could face compulsory retirement from their roles.
