‘Tall, Handsome Men Wanted’: Kolkata Magician Advertises Swayamvar for Daughters

A recent advertisement by Kolkata’s famous magician PC Sorcar has captured attention after it appeared in the ‘Patra-Patri Chai’ section of a Sunday newspaper. The ad, which promotes a Swayamvar for his three daughters, caught many off guard, with some initially questioning its legitimacy.

The unconventional nature of the ad included a candid request for a prospective groom: “Regardless of caste, creed, age (38-45), handsome, tall, well-established man wanted.”

PC Sorcar Jr.’s daughters—Maneka, Mumtaz, and Maubani—are all accomplished in their own fields. Maneka follows her father’s footsteps in magic, while Mumtaz and Maubani have established themselves as actors.

In an interview with ‘Hindustan Times Bangla’, Maubani, the youngest daughter, spoke about the family’s unique approach to marriage. She explained that she believes in the concept of ‘soulmates,’ noting that relationships, whether arranged or through love, are about the connection between two hearts. Reflecting on the Swayamvar tradition, she said, “It’s a beautiful process of selecting a life partner, and that’s how I see this marriage.”

Although Maubani has been single for some time, she emphasized her desire not to waste anyone’s time. She highlighted that, while external appearances might be important in the media industry, a kind heart and honesty are what truly matter. “You have to be able to live under the same roof with someone who has a beautiful heart,” she shared.

Maubani also reflected on the changing dynamics of relationships. Citing her aunt Maneka’s divorce in 2012, she remarked, “Marriage is a big decision, but sometimes getting out of a toxic marriage is better than staying in an unhappy one. Divorce should not be looked down upon, as it’s important to find your soulmate. Society should support people in moving forward in life.”
