The dowry system is a deeply problematic tradition that continues to plague marriage rituals in India, wrenching what should be a joyous occasion into a transaction.
Despite legal bans and public condemnation, a bizarre new video has gone viral, capturing the modern, yet equally troubling, spin of the old demands and the internet is divided between shock and laughter.
The video has a young man, a bridegroom-to-be, candidly sharing with the revered spiritual orator, Guru Aniruddhacharya, about his expectations from the wedding.
What had begun as an innocent talk about his forthcoming wedding suddenly escalated into an astonishing and somewhat amusing revelation of his demands.
The Expensive Help
The man explained to Guruji that his engagement took place a few months ago. He mentioned, “The bride’s family was approaching him with the traditional, material gifts often associated with weddings: they were offering a new bed, a refrigerator, and other house items,” he recalled.
But all their magnanimity was brought to a stunning halt by the groom-to-be, who had an even costlier demand. He told the spiritual head, “Guruji, I don’t need any of that stuff; I just want a Land Rover Defender!”
Surprised by the audacity of the demand for the luxury SUV, Guru Aniruddhacharya immediately asked him, “So, you are explicitly asking for dowry?”

Dowry Help for Wife Comfort
The reply by the groom, which has sent social media into splits, was a masterpiece of denial and humorous deflection. “No, Guruji, not dowry! I am just asking for help,” he insisted.
His efforts to justify why such an expensive vehicle was needed became even more hilarious.
When Guruji asked him why he needed a Defender, the man confidently claimed, “I want the vehicle for his daughter’s comfort!” The wise guru gave a fitting reply, immediately pointing out the groom’s illogical demand: “If you are demanding such an expensive item for her comfort, then as her husband, what exactly is going to be your role?” The conversation perfectly exposed the selfish and materialistic nature of the demand, all while providing a moment of unintended comedy for online viewers.
