App-based ride services like Ola and Uber have changed the transportation landscape, offering convenience for those without personal vehicles. However, recent disturbing incidents involving Uber drivers in Pune and Guwahati have raised serious concerns about the quality of service, safety, and customer rights.
Uber Driver Leaves Woman Stranded Over AC Dispute
In a shocking incident in Pune, a woman named Iffat Shaikh shared a video on social media detailing how her Uber driver abandoned her midway after a disagreement over the car’s air-conditioning (AC). Shaikh, who had booked a sedan, was told by the driver that the AC was exclusive to Premier rides and refused to turn it on for her. The driver’s refusal escalated into a confrontation, culminating in Shaikh being dropped off on the road before reaching her destination.
In the video, Shaikh explained how she had frequently used Uber services in the past, and it was standard for AC to be provided in all types of vehicles, including sedans. She also asked the driver to look into the camera and identify himself, further emphasizing the unacceptable behavior. “Whenever you book a mini or sedan, if you require AC, you can request for one and it is their responsibility to provide,” she stated.

Following the incident, Shaikh had no choice but to take an auto to continue her journey. The incident quickly went viral, with many social media users criticizing Uber for its poor service and raising concerns about safety, especially for women.
Similar Incident in Guwahati: Uber Driver Allegedly Abuses Woman Over AC
This disturbing trend continued with another incident in Guwahati, where a woman named Maini Mahanta shared a similar experience involving an Uber driver. Mahanta had booked an Uber Premier and requested the driver to turn on the AC, which he initially refused. The situation escalated as the driver allegedly verbally and physically abused her after she contacted her husband for help. Mahanta took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to share the details, sparking outrage among netizens.
In response, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma directed the state police and the Director General of Police (DGP) to take immediate action regarding the incident.
Uber’s Response: Addressing Service and Safety Concerns
Both incidents highlight a growing frustration among customers regarding app-based taxi services and their reliability. Uber has yet to issue a public statement addressing these specific cases, but the ongoing complaints demand immediate attention to ensure drivers follow company policies and provide safe, respectful service to all passengers.
As these incidents unfold, Uber and other ride-sharing services will likely face increased scrutiny over their quality of service, driver behavior, and the safety of their passengers. The company must act swiftly to prevent similar incidents and protect the rights of its customers.
While app-based ride services like Uber are often lauded for their convenience and affordability, these incidents underscore the importance of customer service standards, particularly regarding safety and comfort. The recent events in Pune and Guwahati serve as a reminder that despite technological advancements, ride-sharing services must continue to prioritize the well-being of their passengers, especially women, to maintain trust and credibility in the market.
