Chicken and duck eggs are also widely available in markets, which usually cost Rs 7 to Rs 15, with variation seen between cities and villages. But one such egg recently commanded a staggering Rs 43,000 ($500) at an auction in Britain. So, what was so special about this egg?
The Unique Round Egg
Fenton Farm workers in Britain were shocked to find a round egg. As opposed to regular eggs, which are a bit pointed at each end and thinner in the middle, this egg was absolutely round. A rare discovery considered to happen once every million times, it was also responsible for its record price at auction. The auction proceeds were given to the Devon Rape Crisis Organisation.
The Farmer’s Surprise
Alison Green, a three-year veteran farmhand who oversaw about 30,000 eggs, had never encountered anything like it. She found the egg in January and kept it in salt to keep it from spoiling. Green thought the buyer of the egg would appreciate its uniqueness over its edibility. She even thought about purchasing it herself if the price was still low but was left in awe at the last bid.
This is not the first instance of finding a perfectly round egg. An Australian woman found one in 2023.
