In an age where dating websites and social networking sites rule the pursuit of romance, one woman in the US figured she would do things the old-fashioned way  with a twist. A viral video posted on Instagram captures a woman standing amidst the bustle of New York City’s Times Square holding a sign that reads: “Looking for an Indian Husband.”

The photo soon attracted the notice of people walking by (including a ‘Spiderman’ who waved his hand), and most took snaps and posted them on social media. In a matter of hours, the post went viral, with people talking about cross-cultural marriage, wedding expectations, and Indian partners becoming popular in international relationships.

Why Indian Husbands?

Though the identity of the woman is not disclosed, her word choice has set the internet abuzz. The users on social media were pondering why she had particularly singled out Indian husbands.

Some believed it might be due to the view that Indian men are family-oriented and keep traditions in respect. Others humorously suggested the influence of Bollywood films, cricket heroes, or even the western popularity of Indian cuisine.

One user posted, “Shah Rukh Khan films are responsible for this romantic fantasy,” and another one cracked, “She obviously knows Indian men are great at making chai and even better husbands.”

Responses Flood In

The post has evoked thousands of responses from sheer curiosity to outright memes. A few Indian men jokingly stepped forward in the comments section, letting out information about their culinary abilities, work titles, and even horoscopes.

Others argued about the cultural difficulties that a relationship would pose, citing dissimilarities in traditions, eating patterns, and family. “Hope she knows about the big fat Indian wedding and the 200 cousins,” one user quipped.
