India is currently experiencing one of the worst air pollution crises in many of its cities, which stand among the most severely affected cities globally.
The pervasive smog poses a serious threat to public health, environmental quality, and attractiveness of historic urban cores.
Amidst this trying landscape, Jaipur, the fabled “Pink City,” has revealed a highly conspicuous and unlikely approach toward clearing the air: giant outdoor purifiers.
Jaipur Viral Air Purifier Experiment
In a more direct fight against this smog, the municipal authorities have launched a radical pilot project: to fit huge “PAMARES”-style outdoor air purifiers. Four such towering units, each eight meters tall, were installed at high-traffic junctions like Jawahar Circle and Tonk Road.

The installation was a sudden move it happened overnight between November 12 and 13 and has quickly led to a viral video showing one of the cage-like purifiers on Rambagh Street.
The powerful machines, according to officials, are capable of filtering an astonishing one million cubic meters of air per hour, hence providing immediate, localized relief at some of the most congested points. The units are set to become fully operational shortly.

Is This Giant Air Purifier Government Funded?
Funding for the initiative generally comes from the government for improving the environment. Cities such as Jaipur receive grants under national programs, including the NCAP and funds allocated by the Fifteenth Finance Commission meant to help nonattainment cities to implement their action plans aimed at reduction in air pollution.
Cost of Air Purifier
The market rates of similar high-capacity, specialized industrial, and outdoor air cleaning towers in India indicate that the per-unit cost is pretty high.
Standard industrial air purifiers of this magnitude start from around ₹500,000 to over ₹1,800,000. Considering the capacity for powerful filtering and that the units are custom-made, the actual procurement cost of the Jaipur units is very likely to be at the higher end of the above spectrum, possibly running into multiple lakhs of rupees each for a single tower, without including further costs for installation, electricity consumption, and periodic replacement of the filters.
Can These Purifiers Purify the Air of an Entire City?
But many experts see them as a limited, symbolic measure, valuable only for micro-level purification at pollution hotspots. They say air quality improvement has to be achieved through comprehensive source control, such as regulation of industrial output and drastic reduction in vehicular emissions, and not as some expensive, high-energy consumption, end-of-pipe solution.
