Ingenious Escape: Five Assam Prisoners Break Free with Makeshift Rope from Lungis

In a daring escape from Assam’s Morigaon District Jail, five undertrial prisoners facing charges under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act broke out by scaling a 20-foot wall using improvised ropes made from bedsheets, blankets, and lungis. The jailbreak occurred between 1 and 2 am on Friday.

The prisoners, identified as Saifuddin, Ziarul Islam, Nur Islam, Mafidul, and Abdul Rashid, also broke the rods of their barracks before making their escape. Following the incident, the district administration ordered a magisterial probe, and Jail Superintendent Prashanta Saikia was suspended. Two assistant jailers from Guwahati have been temporarily assigned to manage the facility.

Inspector General (Prisons) Pubali Gohain will lead a separate departmental inquiry into the incident, as the hunt for the escaped prisoners continues.
